“Are you kidding me, Brooklynn?” Zac Hanson asked his girlfriend in disappointment.

“I can’t get out of it, Zac. I would feel awful saying no,” Brooklyn replied as she sat down on the couch next to him.

She and Zac had been planning on going to his brother’s Halloween party since the beginning of October. This was the night of the big party, but Brooklyn got volunteered into babysitting her cousin’s kids for the evening. Her cousin had gone into early labor with her third child, so it was kind of a spur of the moment craze to find someone to babysit.

Zac nodded, “Well, I guess they need the help more than I need to go to the party. I’ll stick around tonight and help you babysit.”

“No, Zac. I want you to go to the party and have a good time. Plus I have to take the kids trick-or-treating, and I know you won’t want to do that,” Brooklyn replied.

Suddenly Zac’s eyes lit up, “Trick-or-treating? I haven’t done that in years! I’m definitely staying here to help out!” he said excitedly.

Brooklyn laughed, “Are you sure? You were really looking forward to that party. Plus you know I’m not letting you go to the neighbor’s doors to get candy,” she said with a grin.

Zac nodded, “I’m positive. Besides, the main reason I was looking forward to the party was so I could see you in that skimpy costume!”

Brooklyn playfully punched him in the arm, “You’re a dork. I guess that means we’re going trick-or-treating tonight then!” she said.

After the kids showed up, Zac helped Brooklyn get them dressed up in their costumes. Brayden, who was five years old, was going as a pirate. His three year old sister, Jayla, was dressed as a monkey.

“Zac, I can’t believe you put red lipstick all over Brayden’s face! He is supposed to be a pirate! He doesn’t need blood!” Brooklyn exclaimed as she walked into the bedroom where Zac was helping Brayden get ready.

“What do you mean he doesn’t need blood? He wants to be a tough looking pirate, don’t you Brayden?” Zac asked.

“Yeah! I look cool!” Brayden exclaimed as he took out the sword that went with his costume and proceeded to pretend to stab Zac.

“This kid loves me!” Zac announced. “And look at you, Jayla! You’re probably the cutest looking monkey I’ve ever seen!”

Jayla’s blue eyes twinkled as she smiled at Zac shyly.

“Are you guys ready to go?” Brooklyn asked.

“Yeah, let’s go! I want some candy!” Brayden shouted. It was no wonder he and Zac had cliqued so well. Brayden was practically a miniature version of Zac.

Moments later, the four of them were walking around the block stopping from house to house. The sun was beginning to set and the orange and yellow leaves gently drifted along the sidewalk. The air smelled like fall and the kids had red cheeks from the cool evening breeze.

“So do you wish you would have gone to the party?” Brooklyn asked as she and Zac walked the kids up to the porch of the next house.

Zac shook his head, “No way. This has been awesome. It definitely brings back a lot of memories,” he replied.

“Trick-or-treat!” Brayden shouted happily as an elderly woman opened the front door.

“Oh my, look how adorable and sweet you two children are! Here is some candy for both of you! And here is a piece for your parents for having such lovely children!”

Zac and Brooklyn looked at each other in amusement, but didn’t say anything.

“I can’t believe she thought we were their parents!” Brooklyn laughed as they left the house.

Zac nodded with a grin, “I know. This whole babysitting thing has been kind of fun, actually. Sort of makes me want kids. What do you think?” he asked jokingly.

“Not so fast there, mister. No kids for us anytime soon,” Brooklyn replied smiling.

“I say we volunteer to take them trick-or-treating again next year. I mean, I even got some candy out of this!” Zac said.

Brooklyn smiled, “I think we should. I would like that.”

Zac nodded and took her hand. They wordlessly walked to the next house, enjoying the tranquility of the fall Halloween night.
